Universally Accessible Playground

Project Information

Imagine children of all abilities playing side by side and socializing so that any stigma attached to disabilities melts away. Imagine this being done at a playground with an ocean view. This is what the City’s first universally accessible playground brings to Santa Monica State Beach.

After years of advocacy by Santa Monica’s Disabilities Commission and Recreation & Parks Commission and with funding approved by the City Council, a universally accessible playground was built on the beach near the 2900-block of Barnard Way.  These special types of playgrounds use features that can be enjoyed by children of all abilities.  Play features incorporate unique design elements that integrate children of all abilities socially, physically and emotionally.
