2.         Special Agenda Items/Announcements

The Airport Commission recognizes Michael Ferguson’s departures and the arrivals of the incoming (rotating) Commission secretaries.

Airport Leases

This item is presented to the Airport Commission for information purposes only. List of leases for Airport properties currently under consideration by the City.

Compass Rose Appeal Hearing Rescheduled for November 20th City Council meeting

On September 9, 2019 the Landmarks Commission approved a motion to designate the Compass Rose at the Airport a City Santa Monica Landmark. Discussions were held during the Airport Commission special meetings on November 19, 2019 & December 11, 2019.

Compass Rose appeal has been rescheduled to the November 20, 2020 City Council meeting.

Complaint Filed by Parties to FAA Against the City of Santa Monica – Part 16 Determination

At the November 19, 2019 Airport Commission special meeting discussion began regarding a determination letter from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding FAA Docket No. 16-16-02. On February 12, 2020, the City of Santa Monica sent Reply of the Complainants to City of Santa Monica’s Notice of Appeal and Brief to the Office of the Chief Counsel, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The City received notification from FAA that the time for the FAA to issue its final decision in this complaint was extended to and including September 27, 2020.

Annual Appointments for Boards and Commissions Moved to September 8 City Council Meeting

Due to the pandemic, Council has postponed the appointments for boards and commissions to September 8, 2020.

Next Special Meeting of the Airport Commission

The next Special Meeting of the Airport Commission is scheduled for Monday, September 28, 2020 via teleconference; Agenda submittal deadline September 22, 2020. Discussion to change the time of the meeting to 4 p.m. during the COVID Emergency.


5.         Old Business          

Update on the Public Landscape Division Relocation Effort

As previously discussed in the September 23, 2019 meeting, the Public Landscape Division were to relocate as a result of the expansion of Memorial Park. Due to recent budget reductions, the expansion (and, as a result, the relocation) has been stalled.

Airport Safety Information & Dissemination to Pilots

Ongoing discussion from the October 22, 2018 meeting regarding the production of video media and/or other materials that will provide pilots with safety and fly neighborly procedures when operating to and from the Santa Monica Airport. This project is currently on hold due to the pandemic.

General information items, announcements, and consideration of future agenda items from Airport Commissioners.

Communication Concerns Regarding Airport Activity

The Commission Chair raised concerns regarding communication frequency from Airport staff to the Commission due to the limitations stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Red Six Operation Activity

The Commission Chair would like to discuss concerns raised by the community regarding flight activity at the Airport.

Mission Statement

The Airport Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to the Municipal Airport and to aviation matters generally to the extent that they affect the City.

The Airport Commission has five members, each serving a four-year term. Commissioners must be qualified electors of the City of Santa Monica and may not hold paid office or employment in the City government (SMMC City Charter Article X 1015).  The Airport Commission shall have power and be required to: (a) Act in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to the Municipal Airport and to aviation matters generally to the extent that they affect the City; and (b) Consider and recommend City Council rules and regulations for the management and operation of the Municipal Airport. (Amended at General Municipal Election, November 7, 2006; certified by Res. No. 10187CCS)
