February 6, 2014

As part of the construction of the Expo Light Rail Phase 2, work crews will be removing various trees within the Expo Right-of-Way (ROW), at locations along Colorado Avenue from 5th Street to 7th Street and along Olympic Boulevard from Cloverfield Boulevard to 26th Street in the City of Santa Monica. The work is being managed and performed by the Expo Phase 2 design-build contractor Skanska-Rados Joint Venture (SRJV), and its subcontractors.

What:

Removal of specific trees and vegetation necessary for construction

When:

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 through Friday, March 14, 2014

Hours:

 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Where:

Trees will be removed from locations along Colorado Avenue from 5th Street to 7th Street and along Olympic Boulevard from Cloverfield Boulevard to 26th Street

Work Description:

Construction crews will use heavy machinery and hand tools to cut and clear various shrubs, brush, small plants, trees and other ground cover. The work will be performed in coordination with construction activities related to the Expo Phase 2 Project.

Traffic Impacts:

Trucks used to haul away debris will occasionally interrupt traffic as they enter and exit the construction zone; however, flagmen will be used to safely direct drivers to minimize traffic disruptions.

Parking restrictions in all construction areas will be strictly enforced.

Expect eastbound lane closures on Olympic Boulevard during non-peak hours.

Advisories:

Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout all construction activities.

Noise levels will be monitored to ensure work performed is within the necessary compliance levels.

Work crews will water down the work area to minimize dust, and the air will be monitored.

Please obey all posted construction signs and do not enter the construction work zone.

Expo Tree Facts:

3 independent arborists evaluated the suitability for relocation of each tree. The criteria used to assess each tree was: overall health, structural characteristics, appraised value, and its ability to thrive if relocated.

As part of the Expo Line Project, every Santa Monica street tree not suitable for relocation will be replaced at a 2 for 1 ratio, resulting in a net increase to the Santa Monica Urban Forest. A total of 240 new trees will be planted as a part of project.

(Construction schedules are subject to change for various reasons including but not limited to: weather conditions, unforeseen emergencies and other acts of nature.)
