In preparation for construction of Phase 2 of the Expo Light Rail Line, work crews will be preparing the Expo Right-of-Way for contruction by removing and relocating specific street trees within the City of Santa Monica, at locations along Colorado Avenue and Olympic Boulevard.  The work is managed and performed by the Expo Phase 2 design-build contractor Skansa-Rados Joint Venture (SRJV), and its subcontractors.

 

 

What: Removal of shrubs, specific trees and vegetation necessary for the start of construction
When: Wednesday, September 4, 2013 through wednesday, October 30, 2013
Hours:  8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. (No work will take place on weekends)
Work Description: Construction crews will use heavy machinery and hand tools to cut and clear various shrubs, brush, small plants, trees and other ground cover. The species of trees affected in this phase are: Cupaniopsis Anacardiodes, Melaleuca Quinquenervia, Ficus Benjamina, Metrosideros Excels, and Melaleuca Quinquenervia. The work will be performed in coordination with construction activities related to the Expo Phase 2 Project.
Traffic Impacts:
  • Trucks used to haul away debris will occasionally interrupt traffic as they enter and exit the ROW; however, flagmen will be used to safely direct drivers to minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Parking restrictions in all construction areas will be strictly enforced at all times.
 
Advisories:
  •  Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout all construction activities. 
  • Noise levels will be monitored to ensure work performed is within the necessary compliance levels. 
  • Work crews will water down the work area to minimize dust, and the air will be monitored. 
  • Please obey all posted construction signs and do not enter the construction work zone.
 
Expo Tree Facts:
  • 3 independent arborists evaluated the suitability for relocation of each tree. The criteria used to assess each tree was: overall health, structural characteristics, appraised value, and its ability to thrive if relocated.
  • As part of the Expo Line Project, every Santa Monica street tree not suitable for relocation will be replaced at a 2 for 1 ratio, resulting in a net increase to the Santa Monica Urban Forest. A total of 240 new trees will be planted as a part of project.

  • 3 independent arborists evaluated the suitability for relocation of each tree. The criteria used to assess each tree was: overall health, structural characteristics, appraised value, and its ability to thrive if relocated.
  • As part of the Expo Line Project, every Santa Monica street tree not suitable for relocation will be replaced at a 2 for 1 ratio, resulting in a net increase to the Santa Monica Urban Forest. A total of 240 new trees will be planted as a part of project.

As part of the construction of the Expo Light Rail Line Phase 2, work crews will be removing various trees within the Expo Right-of-Way (ROW), at locations along Colorado Avenue. The work is being managed and performed by the Expo Phase 2 design-build contractor Skanska-Rados Joint Venture (SRJV), and its subcontractors.

What: This tree will be removed for the purpose of constructing the Expo Line Project  
When:  Wednesday May 1st
Hours:  8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. 
(No work will take place on weekends)
  • This tree has been evaluated as unsuitable for relocation by an independent arborist. 
  • The Expo Line Project calls for two trees to be planted in place of every City of Santa Monica tree that is not relocated and must be removed, resulting in a net increase to the Santa Monica Urban Forest. 
  • NOTE: Tree removal appeals do not apply to trees that have been identified for removal as a part of a City Council approved public improvement project as defined in the Urban Forest Master Plan.

The 38” & 36” DSH (Diameter at Standard Height) Grevillea robustas (Silk Oak) will be removed due to extensive structural decay in their major scaffold limbs.

The removal will commence as soon as possible.
