Historic Belmar Park

Project Information

The surface parking lot at the corner of 4th and Pico has been envisioned as an active park space. In the fall of 2015, City Council unanimously voted to proceed with a Civic Center Multipurpose Sports Field that can be used by our community’s youth including students at Santa Monica High School as well as adults. The project is currently in design and will be submitted to the Coastal Commission for their legally-required review in August 2018. The project’s budget of $8 million is fully funded to complete the design and construction, with completion currently slated for January 2021. Please visit for additional project information.

2/28/2017Council Update and Study SessionCouncil received an update on the Civic Center Multipurpose Sports Field and discussed the following: - Setting a hard deadline of June 2017 for negotiations with SMMUSD. If an agreement is not reached, the temporary field should move forward. - A comprehensive planning process for the field should include consideration of the Civic Auditorium and ensure the field does not interrupt rehabilitation of the Civic Auditorium.
10/25/2016Council UpdateCouncil directed staff to: - Reissue the Request for Proposals to a wider range of potential firms for the design of the temporary field in an effort to identify a fee proposal that is aligned with the $200,000 budget in the FY16-17 CIP budget. - Initiate discussions of the temporary field with Coastal Commission staff. - Continue discussions with SMMUSD staff with the intent to return to Council with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to outline issues to be addressed and formalize discussions with SMMUSD for a partnership project in the Civic Center that would include subterranean parking and a permanent multi-purpose sports field with associated permanent amenities.
5/24/2016Budget Study SessionAt the Council budget study session, funding totaling $200,000 was identified in FY16-17 as part of the FY16-18 Capital Improvement Program for design of the field. Council adopted a motion directing staff to earmark funds for the construction of the Civic Center multi-purpose sports field and to provide quarterly updates to Council on the status of the project to ensure that it moves forward as quickly as possible.
