Electronic Waste

Each year in California millions of computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items become "obsolete" in the eyes of consumers. Rapid advances in technology and an expanding demand for new features accelerate the generation of "old" electronic equipment ("e-waste"). The result is a growing challenge for businesses, residents and local governments as they search for ways to reuse, recycle or properly dispose of this equipment.

Many components of electronic equipment--including metals, plastic and glass--can be reused or recycled, while others may present environmental hazards if not managed correctly.

To meet this challenge, The Santa Monica Recycling Center (Allan Company) offers a comprehensive drop-off program for residents and businesses. Please contact the Santa Monica's Recycling Center operated by Allan Company, 2411 Delaware Ave., SM 90404, (310) 453-9677.  Hours of Operation: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am - 2:00 pm, Sunday closed.

Electronic recycling is free, although effective November 1, 2016 Allan Co will be charging a handling fee for the recycling of large appliances.  The rate is $20 per appliance for larger item appliances that may have contained Freon, such as refrigerators and air conditioners and $10 for all other large appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers. In addition to the Santa Monica Recycling Center, residents and businesses can donate their technology to human-I-T, a Los Angeles based non-profit. human-I-T provides free technology pick-ups and free drop off locations for convenience. Data security is provided with the donation of acceptable items.
