Each year, Californians generate approximately 40 million scrap tires.  The City of Santa Monica is doing its part to help divert a portion of those tires from stockpiling in landfills by using recycled tires in our Annual Street Repaving projects.  Since July 2011 the City has installed 27,300 tons of Rubberized Asphalt which equates to 709,800 tires.

The benefits of incorporating recycled tires into Annual Street Repaving projects include less maintenance, quieter roads, and better contrast between the  pavement and road stripings, thereby improving pedestrian, bicyclist, and vehicle safety.

For more information about Rubberized Asphalt Concrete, watch our Public Service Announcement with Hany Demitri of the Santa Monica Public Works department.

This project is supported by a grant from the State of California, Department of Resource Recycling and Recovery.
