Santa Monica is known as a walk friendly community - residents value walking in the neighborhoods and visitors travel from all over the world to walk on the pier, beach and shop. Santa Monica takes preserving the ability to walk places and the need to do so safely seriously. Adoption of the 2010 Land Use and Circulation Element launched efforts to examine public right of way use by pedestrians, and create an action plan for improving pedestrian facilities and encouraging walking as a healthy life style choice through well designed engaging public rights of way.
