The General Plan Housing Element sets forth the City’s policies and programs for housing production and maintenance to accommodate the needs of the community, including current and future residents of Santa Monica. Housing is an issue of importance on the state and regional levels, and the State of California mandates regular updates of every jurisdiction’s Housing Element, including a requirement for independent review and certification by the State of California. Santa Monica is current with this requirement, having adopted the 2013-2021 Housing Element on December 10, 2013. Santa Monica's Housing Element was certified by the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) in January 2014.
The 2013-2021 Housing Element is consistent with the 2010 Land Use and Circulation Element and, in particular, its emphasis on conserving existing neighborhoods and planning for new housing units near transit opportunities in mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods. Information about the 2013-2021 Housing Element Update project is available here.
