Update Effective July 1, 2017

The Water Neutrality Ordinance for Santa Monica went into effect capping water use for new developments to an average of the past five year historical use for that individual parcel.  The ordinance is one strategy to achieve the City's goal for water self-sufficiency by 2020. By maximizing water-efficiency, local groundwater and alternate water supplies, the city will no longer need to import water to meet all of its needs.
