  Internship Opportunities

The City of Santa Monica offers a unique and exciting opportunity for students to be introduced to careers in Municipal Government. The City’s Internship Program gives its interns an insider’s view into management level work within local government through an eight week program. The goal of the program is to expose interns to the many facets of public policy and management. Each intern will provide administrative assistance to a City department or division.

To help broaden the internship experience, other highlights of the program include:

  •          City Tours and Events
  •          Careers in Government Panel Discussion
  •          Master Class with the City Manager

 Interns are placed in a variety of divisions and are involved in a range of projects and processes.

Calendar of Events

Application Period: December 2, 2019 to February 7, 2020
Interviews begin in March
Program Start Date: June 22, 2020
Program End Date: August 13, 2020

*Note:  There are immediate vacancies within the Big Blue Bus.  To be considered for these vacancies, please apply by 5:30 PM, Thursday, January 3, 2019.


Internship possibilities are available in numerous departments/divisions throughout the City. Placement in the following assignments is based on availability:

• Big Blue Bus City Attorney's Office
• City Clerk City Manager's Office
Community and Cultural Services Finance
Fire Department Housing and Economic Development
Information Systems Department Planning and Community Development
Police Department Public Library
Public Works Rent Control

Within their divisions, Interns are involved in, but not limited to, general administration, strategic planning, budget development and analysis, policy research, program design, implementation and evaluation, as well as day to day job responsibilities.


Currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program in an accredited college/university with major coursework in public administration or closely related field.
