I am conducting a survey for another municipal agency. Whom should I contact?
Under our “Labor Relations” tab on our website, see the section titled “For Other Agencies” which provides answers to various survey questions.

Does the City of Santa Monica provide for Veteran’s Preference and if so what are the benefits?
Yes. Veteran’s Preference will be given in accordance with applicable law. Candidates must submit a copy of their DD-214 (proof of military service) with their application. You may attach a scanned copy of your DD-214 to your online application, attach a copy to your paper application, or e-mail it to the HR Analyst who is handling the recruitment to which you have submitted an application.

Do I have to be a United States citizen to apply?

You must have the legal right to work in the United States or have United States citizenship. If hired, you must present acceptable proof of identity, and the legal right to work in the United States and the authenticity of the documents must be verified before starting work.

Where can I access a public computer to complete my application?
If you do not have access to a computer, you can visit the following locations:
City Hall Location - City Hall Lobby has an accessible computer that will allow you to complete an application.
SMPL Location - Santa Monica Main Library has multiple accessible computers that you are also able to use.

Where can I find open jobs?
Job openings are updated every Monday. Please visit www.smgov.net/hr to see what jobs are currently available or visit the Human Resources Department at 1685 Main Street, Rm. 101, Santa Monica, CA, 90401, and Monday through Thursday 7:30am – 5:30pm. We are closed every other Friday with the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm on the Friday’s we are open. You can also access the Job Hotline at (310) 458-8697.

How do I know if I am qualified for this job?

The minimum requirements are listed in the job posting. Your application will be carefully reviewed, along with any other materials required on the job posting to determine whether you meet these requirements. To ensure you move forward in the process make sure you meet the requirements and that all the required information/documentation is provided.

These positions are only open to permanent City of Santa Monica employees who have passed an initial probationary period.

Use the WIN Email Notification System (Web Information Network)
Please visit our website, click on “Employment” then “WIN Job Openings Email”, complete all necessary fields and you will begin receiving weekly notifications regarding open and promotional positions within the City.

Job Interest Card
If you are interested in a specific position you can search for that position when you visit our website, click on “Employment” then “Job Descriptions”, and then the specific position. Once you click on that position, there will be a link that reads “Email me when jobs like this become available.” Once here, you will need to input all necessary information to ensure you will be notified for future openings. Notifications will occur for one year from the date the job interest card was completed.

 How do I set up an account?
To set up an account with the City please visit www.governmentjobs.com, the account is free. To set up this free account, you only need an email address. If you don’t have an email address, there are a number of email providers that will allow you to create a free email address within minutes.

How can I can change my online application account information, including change of contact information?
Contact the Human Resources Department at (310) 458-8246. Please be sure to indicate the position (s) you have applied for.

Am I able to create an account without having to apply for a specific position?

Yes. Please visit www.governmentjobs.com to create a free account.

Am I able to upload my resume to the application?
No, this is not necessary. Resumes will not be considered when screening the online application.

How do I access my online account once it is established?
Please visit www.governmentjobs.com to access your account.

I forgot my online application account password, how do I retrieve it?
Please visit www.governmentjobs.com, at the login screen, please enter your username or email address and click the “Reset Password” link.

 

Applying for a Position

How can I apply?
Please visit our website: www.smgov.net/hr.  You will click on "Employment," then "Job Openings." Scroll to the bottom to view our list of current positions.  Whichever position you are interested in, please click that position.  If the position is currently open, there will be an "Apply" link, located next to the phrase, "Print Job Information."

 How long do I have to complete the application?
Each application has a specific Closing Date/Time. Carefully read the closing date and time for each position. Late applications will not be accepted.

 What information will I need to have readily available to fill out my application?

-           Work History
(E.g., Company/Agency name, address, start and end date (Month/Year), position title, hours worked per week, monthly salary, supervisor's name and title)

-           Education
(E.g., Name of school, city and state, start and end date (Month/Year), College Major, Units completed (semester/quarter units), degree received).

-           Licenses/Certifications
(E.g., Type, Month/year issued, expiration month/year, certificates/licenses number (if applicable), agency issued by).

May I apply with a resume and cover letter?
No. A city application along with any required supplemental application must be completed for each position you apply for with the City of Santa Monica.

May I submit an on-line application if I miss the deadline?
No. The closing date and time listed on the job posting is the deadline to apply. If you are in the process of applying but have not submitted your application prior to the closing time, the system will not allow you to submit your application for that position. You must click "confirm" prior to the deadline in order for your application to be received.

May I add additional information or documents to my application after it has been submitted?
You will not be allowed to modify your application once it has been submitted. If you have additional information or documents to be attached to a specific application, you must re-submit your application. If you decide to use this option, your previously submitted application will be forfeited and replaced with the newly submitted application.

How can I check the status of my online application?
You can review the status of your application at any time by going to www.governmentjobs.com, use your username or email and password you created when you established your account and click on "Application Status." You will view a list of all online applications you submitted and the current status for that application.

Do I have to submit a separate application for each posting?
Yes. Each application is different and evaluated separately based on the job which you are applying for.

Is there a limit to the number of applications I can submit?
No, but you must submit a separate application and complete any applicable supplemental application (s) for each position you wish to apply for.

What if my college degree is from a school outside of the United States?
Please refer to the job posting for the educational requirements. You will be required to certify that your degree is equivalent to a degree obtained in the United States. Click here for additional information regarding degree equivalency from a foreign institution.

 May I use volunteer or intern experience on my application?
The minimum requirement section will specify if the experience must be "recently paid" experience or if you may include "volunteer" experience.

May I substitute experience for education?
For some job openings, experience may be substituted for the required education. Always refer to the minimum requirements of the job posting for specific information.

May I substitute education for experience?
For some job openings, an Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's Degree or college-level course work may be substituted for the required experience. Always refer to the minimum requirements of the job posting for specific information.


 

Notifications


I’ve submitted my application. When should I expect to hear back from the City?
All candidates will be notified of the status of their applications within 4 to 6 weeks after the final closing date of the recruitment for the position (s) they applied for.

I just took a written test and/or participated in an oral interview. When will I get my results?
Typically notifications will be mailed within two weeks of the test/interview date.

How will I be notified?

All notifications are sent via e-mail listed on your online application.

 

 

Examination Process


What types of test are given?

The evaluation process for a job posting may include, but is not limited to, any one or a combination of the following: evaluation of the information contained in your employment application and supplemental forms; written test; writing exercise; oral interview; performance test; physical ability test; simulation test and/or assessment center. Each job posting will specify the type of screening process utilized.

May I submit a typing certificate in lieu of taking the City of Santa Monica’s typing test?

May I take the test online?

No, currently the City of Santa Monica does not offer on-line testing. Examinations are administered in person at designated testing sites. Your invitation to an examination will list the specific time and location where you should report to take the examination.

How can I prepare for the test and are there study guides?

To ensure that all applicants receive the same information, we are unable to direct applicants to specific study materials. Our only suggestion is for applicants to review the examination announcement that describes those factors that will be covered in the examination.

What if I need special testing accommodations?
You must notify the Human Resources Department at least 72 hours prior to the examination and provide official documentation of your condition and a recommendation for type of accommodation.

I’ve been invited to take an exam and/or interview. Can I reschedule?

You may contact the analyst that originally contacted yourself regarding that position. You may also contact the Human Resources Department at (310) 458-8246 to inquire if the exam is being offered on another day. If it is, you may be allowed to reschedule provided there is available space during that time.

I won’t be in town on the day of my interview. May I request a phone interview instead?

Please contact the Human Resources Department to inquire if arrangements can be made.

 

 

Selection Process


What is the selection process?
Upon completion of all screening processes, applicants will be notified of their status and an eligible list will be created. The hiring department with a vacancy will receive the eligible list that is used to contact and interview eligible candidates as needed. All candidates may not be contacted for an interview. The final selection and offer of employment is made by the hiring department.

Can I still apply for jobs with the City of Santa Monica, if I have a criminal record?

Yes. A Conviction Information Questionnaire must be completed before hire. On this form, you must list ALL criminal convictions you have had. A criminal record is not necessarily a basis for disqualification from City employment. Each applicant’s conviction record will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis considering the type and seriousness of the crime, how much time has elapsed and the nexus to the job you are applying for. Any employment offer is conditional pending the results of the pre-employment screening process.

If I am disqualified for one position, does that affect my ability to apply for other positions?
No. But you must submit a separate application and any supplemental application(s) for each additional position you apply for.
