 Minimum Wage Working Group

The Santa Monica City Council directed the City Manager to establish an ad hoc working group to review and recommend adjustments to Santa Monica's recently adopted minimum wage law prior to the law taking effect on July 1, 2016.

First Meeting:      Wednesday, February 17th, 2016 | 4:30-6:30pm
Location/Time:   Santa Monica Institute (SMI) Training Room

Civic Center Parking Structure, 4th Street & Olympic Drive, North side, 2nd Floor

The meetings are open to the public and all three will begin at 4:30 pm.

Working Group Role

The working group is composed of representatives from business, labor, and the community and has been tasked with the role of reviewing and seeking consensus on various elements of the Santa Monica Minimum Wage Ordinance, as directed by Council at the January 12, 2016 City Council meeting.  Staff anticipates presenting the results of the working group sessions to Council at the April 12, 2016 City Council meeting.  Should the group not reach consensus, the law will go into effect in its current form on July 1, 2016.

The general elements of the minimum wage ordinance under review include:

  • Elements of Service Charges provision
  • Elements of Sick Leave provision
  • Discussion of the first time worker provision
  • Approaches to Education and Enforcement of the ordinance
  • Alignment of Santa Monica wage levels
