Special Programs

Woodlawn Cemetery and the City of Santa Monica host a number of programs throughout the year to honor those who have passed. We invite you to join us in celebrating and remembering us at these events:

Living History Tours

History comes alive at Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum & Mortuary as we present our Living History Tours. Join us as costumed guides portraying noted personalities interred at Woodlawn lead visitors on tours of our facility and share their stories and contributions to history and society.

Please note:

This year, the Living History Tour is being held in conjunction with the Opening Ceremony of Eternal Meadow, the Cemetery's new green burial section on April 1, 2017 starting at 11am. Due to heavy pedestrian traffic, the Cemetery grounds will be closed to vehicle traffic. Here is information regarding parking so that you may plan:

  • There will be limited street parking available; please be advised that the east side of 14th street that borders the cemetery will be available only for disabled persons parking and event vendors.
  • Free parking can be found at Santa Monica College Lot 4 at 16th and Pico Blvd.
  •  Attendees requiring assistance can be dropped off at both Cemetery entrances and there will be shuttle service at the Cemetery entrances to the event site on the grounds.

If you have additional questions, feel free to call our office at (310) 458-8717.

Annual Memorial Day Observance

Every Memorial Day, Woodlawn honors our nation’s brave men and women in uniform with a ceremony open to the public. Highlights of the program typically include patriotic music provided by local groups, keynote speeches by prominent local officials, and an exciting fly-over of military aircraft. Music and other activities follow the ceremony.

Dia de los Muertos

In Mid Fall, join us for a traditional Mexican celebration! Create a coronita (crown) of fresh marigolds and papel picado (perforated paper) to honor a loved one who has passed. Tour the grave sites and explore the history of Santa Monica’s ancestors. Learn the philosophy and history of the day. Watch a documentary and discover how a small town in Mexico prepares for Dia de los Muertos. Participate in the closing traditional Nahuatl Ceremony with live traditional music and enjoy fresh tamales.
