The City of Santa Monica Trades Intern Program is a 2-year limited term position that gives on the job training experience to adults between the ages of 18 to 30 years old.  Applicants need to have Class C driver's license or have attended SMMUSD schools in Santa Monica to apply.

Participants are paid $16.63 per hour while learning new skills in various occupational trades at Big Blue Bus, Resource Recovery & Recycling Department and Water Department.  They receive paid on the job training to acquire foundational skills in a trade, as well are provided with resources to succeed in life both in and outside the workplace that will prepare them for future employment in the skilled trades.

During the internship, interns participate in a weekly jobs skills class and are required to continue their education by completing their GED or attend Trade School in a trade.  On the job, the interns perform a variety of unskilled or semiskilled tasks to build skills needed for future employment and potentially obtain a class A/B driver license including:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Hydraulics
  • Carpentry
  • Vehicle mechanics
  • And More

TO QUALIFY FOR THE TRADES INTERN PROGRAM, applicants must:

  • Be a Santa Monica resident or have attended SMMUSD school in Santa Monica
  • Show proof of eligibility to work in the United States
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
  • Show a valid California Driver's license

High School graduates are welcome, but preference will be given to those who have not completed their high school education.  Bachelor's degree holders do not qualify.  To qualify, any convictions on the record of the applicant must be six months or older at the date of the application.  Participants must obtain a clean record during the Trades Interns Program.
