Law Clerk Opportunities

The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office has unpaid law clerk opportunities available over the summer and during the school year for qualified law students. Opportunities may be available across all of the City Attorney’s Office divisions. Law clerks must abide by the highest ethical and professional standards. Candidates will be considered based on qualifications including excellence in verbal and writing skills, proficiency in legal research, and interest in public service. Start and end dates are flexible; law clerks should be available a minimum of 10 hours per week. To apply, candidates should submit (1) a cover letter stating interest in the position, (2) a current resume, (3) a recent writing sample of no more than 10 pages, and (4) names of two references. Law clerk positions are unpaid. A background check, including submission of fingerprints to the State of California Department of Justice, may be required prior to beginning the clerkship.

The City of Santa Monica is an equal opportunity employer. The City Council’s Policy Statement reads in part, “In the recruitment, selection, assignment, promotion, discipline and training of personnel, we will consider only job-related skills, abilities, knowledge and performance. We will develop positive measures to eliminate discrimination based on race, color, gender, national origin, religion, age, disability or sexual harassment in the workplace.”
