Santa Monica City Attorney's Office

The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office has a summer law clerk opportunity available during the summer of 2018 for a qualified law student. The Municipal Division drafts local laws and defends lawsuits about them. It provides a broad range of advisory and transactional services for the City and represents the City in civil cases involving planning and land use, housing, environmental issues and contract and business disputes. The law clerk must abide by the highest ethical and professional standards. Candidates must have excellent verbal and writing skills, strong proficiency in online research, and an interest in public service. Start date is flexible depending on the selected candidate's school calendar. This position is unpaid. To apply, candidates should submit (1) a current resume, (2) a writing sample of no more than 10 pages, and (3) a cover letter describing your interest. Candidates should also be prepared to submit at least two references from individuals familiar with the candidate's work habits and analytical skills. Successful completion of a background check, which includes submission of fingerprints to the State of California Department of Justice, may also be required.

Santa Monica City Attorney's Office

The Civil Liability Division of the Santa Monica City Attorney's Office has a summer law clerk opportunity available during the summer of 2018, for a qualified law student.  The Civil Liability Division defends the City in all civil lawsuits seeking damages.  Deputy City Attorneys in the Division litigate a wide variety of cases from investigation to trial, including public entity premises liability (i.e., Dangerous Condition of Public Property), general negligence and personal injury claims, and employment, civil rights, and contract disputes.

Working alongside the Deputy City Attorneys, the law clerk will get exposure to civil litigation, both procedural and substantive, including depositions, written discovery, research, law and motion work, mediation, and trial preparation.  The law clerk will accompany Deputy City Attorneys to depositions, mediations and court hearings.  Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the work, the law clerk must abide by the highest ethical and professional standards.

Applicants must have completed their second year of law school.  Candidates must have excellent verbal and writing skills, strong proficiency in online research, and an interest in public service. 

The internship requires a minimum of 20 hours per week, over a 10-week period.  Start date is flexible depending on the selected candidate's school calendar.

This position is unpaid but eligible for school credit, where applicable.
