Santa Monica, California – The Santa Monica Public Library celebrates the memory, art, and spirit of actress Gloria Stuart with a special screening of clips from the documentary, The Secret Life of Old Rose: The Love & Art of Gloria Stuart, directed by her grandson, Benjamin Stuart Thompson. Gloria Stuart’s great-granddaughter, Deborah B. Thompson, will also read excerpts from her eBook, Butterfly Summers, a memoir chronicling her experience as Stuart’s art apprentice. This event takes place on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

Best remembered as the Oscar-nominated star of Titanic, Stuart, who lived to be 100, was also a bonsai master, art-book printer, poet, and painter. A selection of her rare, hand-printed artist’s books will be displayed at the event, including Boating with Bogart, Remembering Casablanca, My Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and one of only nine illustrated, butterfly-shaped books, Gloria Stuart’s Flight of Butterfly Kites, a copy of which is part of the John Paul Getty Museum’s artist’s books collection. Historic posters featuring Stuart’s films from 1930s will also be on view, along with photographs of her oil paintings and bonsai, selections of which are now part of the Huntington Library art collections.

A question and answer session will follow the memoir reading. For more information on Deborah B. Thompson and her memoir, visit www.butterflysummersmemoir.com.

This event is presented free to the public and is open to all ages. Free tickets for auditorium seating will be released one hour prior to program. One ticket per guest, and guest must be present to receive a ticket. No prior reservations available. Seating is first come, first served. This is an event of The Living Room …a place for adults program series.
