Each year in California millions of computers,
monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic
items become "obsolete" in the eyes of consumers. Rapid advances in technology
and an expanding demand for new features accelerate the generation of "old"
electronic equipment ("e-waste"). The result is a growing challenge for
businesses, residents and local governments as they search for ways to reuse,
recycle or properly dispose of this equipment.
Many components of electronic
equipment--including metals, plastic and glass--can be reused or recycled,
while others may present environmental hazards if not managed correctly. This
website provides information and resources on how to properly manage your
electronic products.
To meet this challenge, Solid Waste offers a comprehensive drop-off program
for residents and businesses. Solid Waste provides electronic recycling at the
Santa Monica Refuse and Transfer
Station six days a week, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through
Saturday, (310) 829-7323. Electronic recycling is free to residents. There
is a 50-cent per pound charge for businesses and a yearly round-up for
residents, businesses, and the surrounding region. All electronic waste is
accepted.
Under no circumstances should electronic waste be left at the curb or in the
alley, or placed into the trash or recycling cart for collection.
