The Santa Monica City Council adopted a Bicycle Master Plan in January 1995 which provides a wide variety of improvements and ongoing programs for commuter and recreational bicyclists in Santa Monica by creating a network of local and regional bikeways. A bikeway is defined as any road, path, or way which is specifically designed for bicycle travel, whether such facilities are for the exclusive use of bicycles or are shared with other forms of transportation.

The city's Bicycle Master Plan provides for a continuous and coordinated network of bikeways to provide access to businesses, schools, parks, beaches, and points outside of the city. The network includes three types of bikeways:

  • Bike Paths completely separate bicycles from motor vehicles.
  • Bike Lanes are signed and striped lanes along the roadway.
  • Bike Routes are signed routes which bicyclists share with motor vehicles.

Maps showing the locations of existing bikeways are available on-line at smgov.net, or from the Transportation Management Division on the first floor of City Hall, at 1685 Main Street. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and alternate Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you have concerns about the maintenance of any bikeway, please contact the Street Maintenance Division at (310) 458-8505. If you have any other questions regarding bikeways, please call the Transportation Management Office at (310) 458-8295.
