Environmental Programs548 - Urban/Water Runoff Prevention and Control When any water flows off your property and into the street, whether from rainfall or an over-watered lawn, it goes directly into Santa Monica Bay. As it moves toward the storm drain, the water picks up particles and chemicals from hard surfaces and vegetation, including fertilizers, various vehicle-related materials, pet wastes, loose sediments and more. Once in the bay, these materials and compounds degrade water quality, affecting both beach-goers and marine life. When used wisely, runoff is a valuable resource for you and the environment. Kept on one's property to percolate into the ground, it recharges our aquifers, an important drinking water supply, and avoids polluting the bay. Whether from landscape irrigation, hosing of sidewalks or new construction, all property owners should understand the consequences of urban runoff and their solutions, as well as applicable city regulations. To report pollution, call the city's Pollution Prevention Hotline at (310) 458-8945. For helpful tips and other information on city programs and regulations to reduce urban runoff pollution, please call the Stormwater Management Division at (310) 458-8223 or visit www.smepd.org. Our hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and alternate Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
