192 - Santa Monica Animal Shelter

Santa Monica Animal Control is a division of the Santa Monica Police Department, and is located at 1640 9th Street, one block north of Olympic Boulevard. Animal Shelter business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Wednesdays from 10 am to 7 pm and Sundays from noon to 5 pm, and the telephone number is (310) 458-8594. During these hours, you may enter "0" to speak to shelter personnel. Please remember, it is both a crime and inhumane to abandon an animal at the shelter when it is closed.

To report a stray or injured animal whose owner is unknown or unavailable, please call (310) 458-8595 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or the Santa Monica Police Dispatcher at (310) 458-8491 after hours. If your own animal is sick or injured and your veterinarian is unavailable, check your phone book's yellow pages under "veterinarians," or "veterinary emergency services."

The shelter houses both stray and owner-surrendered animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and an occasional bird or reptile.  Owners of lost pets are encouraged to come in person to look for their lost pet and to file a lost report as soon as their pet is discovered missing.  After the hold period, the animals are made available for adoption. Adopted cats and dogs must, by law, be spayed or neutered before adoption. Free health examination certificates honored by local veterinarians are provided to adopters.
