186 - Dog Licenses

Santa Monica residents are required to license each of their dogs every calendar year. First-time dog licenses must be obtained in person, at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter, 1640 - 9th Street (just north of Olympic Boulevard). A valid rabies certificate, proof of sterility if it applies, and proof of residency is required to complete licensing.

As of July 1, 2007, the dog license fee is $15.50 for spayed or neutered dogs, and $51.70 for unaltered dogs. Dog licenses expire on December 31 of each year, and renewal notices are mailed in mid-December.  As a courtesy, a $15 to $25 late renewal penalty is not charged if dog licenses are renewed on or before March 31.  Please visit our website at santamonicapd.org or call (310) 458-8594 for business hours or for more information on animals.
