BUILDING INDUSTRY BRACES FOR
ALL-NEW CODES

NEW REQUIREMENTS TAKE EFFECT JANUARY 2, 2008

The State of California—and City of Santa Monica— will soon be adopting a series of new building code standards. All projects requiring a building permit on or after January 2, 2008 will have to be designed to the new 2006 International Building Codes (or the 2007 California Building Code).

This is the first major new code adoption in the state in almost nine years. All California cities must adopt these codes, and they may make certain amendments to suit local conditions. As a result of a collaborative process with major jurisdictions in the Los Angeles basin, the City of Santa Monica and other jurisdictions are adding amendments that will maintain the same high level of seismic safety provided by current codes.

For more information, please contact Ben Yousefi in the Building & Safety Division at (310) 458-8355.
