Getting to Know Rachel Carson at the Santa Monica Public Library

Santa Monica, California – Ask many green living advocates to cite a personal hero, and Rachel Carson is likely to mentioned frequently.  As part of Citywide Reads 2008, the Santa Monica Public Library is pleased to present “Getting to Know Rachel Carson,” an introduction the pioneering environmentalist.  Led by Tara Treiber, Heal the Bay/Santa Monica Pier Aquarium’s Education Manager, this special talk will take place Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s second floor Multipurpose Room.   

Often credited with launching the environmental movement, Rachel Carson was a scientist, ecologist, oceanographer, conservationist and writer.  She was also a woman, operating in the scientific realm and at a time when women faced strong discrimination.  Among her many essential books are The Sea Around Us and Silent Spring.  Rachel Carson is also the personal heroine of Miles O’Malley, the protagonist of this year’s Citywide Reads selection, The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch.

Admission for this Citywide Reads special event is free, and open to all ages.  Seating is limited, and on a first arrival basis.
