Manteño with John Haslett |

Santa Monica, California – As part of the Spring Into Adventure series of programs, the Santa Monica Public Library presents “The Voyage of the Manteño” with John Haslett on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. In 1995, modern day expeditioner John Haslett went to a tiny fishing village in Ecuador to begin building a thirty thousand-pound raft made entirely out of balsa wood, bamboo and manila rope. Inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s famed Kon-Tiki voyage, Haslett intended to sail five thousand nautical miles across the open sea to Hawaii. What transpired, however, was anything but a re-creation of Heyerdahl’s famous voyage. Joining the Library now, Mr. Haslett will recount his thrilling adventures in pictures and words, as well as sign copies of his book, The Voyage of the Manteño: the Education of a Modern Day Expeditioner. This public program is free and open to all. Auditorium seating is limited, and seating is on a first arrival basis. For more information, contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600; or visit the Library’s web site at www.smpl.org.
