Santa Monica Public Library’s 2007 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Library's north courtyard, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.  The winning authors, illustrators and publishers are invited to attend, as well as members of the sustainability community, local press and city staff.

The Green Prize has been created to encourage and commend authors, illustrators, and publishers who produce quality books that make significant contributions to, support the ideas of, and broaden public awareness of sustainability.  Sustainability is defined as "meeting current needs – environmental, economic and social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same" (Sustainable City Plan, City of Santa Monica).

Prizes will be awarded in the categories of Youth Fiction, Youth Nonfiction, Youth Picture Book, Adult Nonfiction, and Adult Reference.  In addition, honorary awards will be given for a youth and an adult title with local relevance, and a Green Prize Pioneer Award will be presented to honor a writer who has paved the way for discourse on sustainable issues.

This event is free and open to the public.  Locally grown refreshments will be provided by the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market after the ceremony.  For more information about the Santa Monica Public Library’s Green Prize for Sustainable Literature, call (310) 458-8600 or visit www.smpl.org/greenprize.htm.
