To celebrate the conclusion of the phenomenally popular children’s book series, the Santa Monica Public Library will host several "Harry Potter" events during the summer months, June 18 to August 5.

  • Harry Potter “Solve the Mystery” Contest – Who do you think will die in the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?  Students in grades 6 to 12 are invited to predict the death of one of the characters in the book and provide a detailed explanation of how this character dies.  Correct predictions will be entered into a prize drawing for a $50 gift certificate.  Contest runs from June 18 to July 20.  Entry forms are available at the Main Library’s Youth Reference Desk, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, and at the branches.

  • How Do You Spell Magic: HARRY POTTER – Join us on Saturday, July 7 at 12:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium for a special presentation by George Beahm, author of Muggles and Magic, and Stan Goldin, co-author of The Whimsic Alley Book of Spells: Mythical Incantations for Magicians of All Ages, as they delve into J.K. Rowling’s magical world.  Book sale and signing will follow.  Muggles of all ages are welcome.  Seating is first-come, first- served.  This event is co-sponsored by Whimsic Alley.

  • Harry Potter Discussion – What do you think will happen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?  On Saturday, July 7 at 2:00 p.m., muggles of all ages are invited to discuss their theories with other fans in the Community Room at the Montana Avenue Branch, 1704 Montana Avenue.

  • Harry Potter Nightly Movie Marathon – Enjoy the first four movies in the series before the theatrical release of number 5!  Each night from Monday, July 9 through Thursday, July 12, the first four Harry Potter movies will be shown in order in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium at the Main Library.  All movies will start at 6:00 p.m.  Seating is first come, first served.

  • A Day at Hogwarts – On Saturday, August 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Main Library will transform into the magical school featured in the Harry Potter books.  Students will take several Hogwarts-like classes, participate in a House Cup tournament, and end with a Great Hall celebration!  Children ages 8 to 17 are invited to register for this fun event between July 9 and July 27.  Sign up at the Main Library’s Youth Reference Desk or call (310) 458-8621 to reserve a spot.  Space is limited.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library.

  • Family Book Discussion: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – On Sunday, August 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s multipurpose room, families can share their reactions to the last book and their thoughts about the Harry Potter series as a whole.  All ages are welcome.  Seating is first come, first served.

All programs are free and open to the public.  For more information, call the Library at (310) 458-8600 or check out our website at www.smpl.org
