FARMERS' MARKETS CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH PROGRAMS AT SMPL

Santa Monica Public Library presents a three-part program series celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Santa Monica Farmers’ Markets. The new Main Library will host the programs on the third Thursday in July, August, and September, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

The first program in the series, Farms, Farming and Farmers’ Markets, will take place on July 20. Farmers' Market Supervisor Laura Avery will moderate the discussion; panelists include Los Angeles Times food writer Russ Parsons; Maryanne Carpenter from Coastal Farms, Santa Paula; Phil McGrath of McGrath Family Farms, Camarillo; and Evan Kleiman, owner/chef of Angeli Caffe and host of KCRW’s Good Food. Learn about the future of California’s small farms and how farmers’ markets help keep farmers on their farms. Stay afterward for farm fresh food prepared by Evan Kleiman.

On August 17, the program From Professional Chef to the Accomplished (and Not-So-Accomplished) Home Cook will feature a panel discussion on how market ingredients are purchased and prepared; and how the average shopper can take advantage of the best that the market has to offer. Finding the Best in California, on September 21, will feature a panel of farmers, food writers, and chefs sharing anecdotes and first-hand experiences in located inspiring things to grow and cook.
