  • Santa Monica city employee living wage became effective January 1, 2005; Council held first reading on an ordinance implementing the city contractor living wage on February 22, 2005, with adoption scheduled for March 8, 2005.  If the ordinance is adopted on schedule, city contracts entered into after April 8, 2005 must include a living wage for contractors’ employees.  (See staff reports from the February 8 and February 22, 2005 City Council meetings for additional information, including exceptions.)

To assist the Council and community in assessing the PERI study, Dr. Pollin proposed that the City engage two noted economists to review his work. Dr. David Neumark of Michigan State University (currently at the Public Policy Institute of California) and Dr. Richard Freeman of Harvard University (currently at the London School of Economics) were engaged to do so. Their reviews of the study are posted here:
