Human Services staff conducts ongoing program
monitoring and extensive community planning efforts
to assess community needs and priorities.
Staff work closely with a number of non-profit
organizations to promote effective program delivery,
distribute grant funds, provide technical assistance
regarding program, administrative and fiscal
matters, and plan for future services. Staff
also oversee policy development and major funding
initiatives related to social services, early
childhood education and other human service
programs.

...A Bit of History
In 1999-2000, the Human Services Division engaged
in a comprehensive community planning process called
Community Voices. Through
Community Voices we researched and developed a
profile of the Santa Monica community and determined
the range of human service needs. Then, with
the participation of residents, service providers
and the business community, we determined the
priorities for a 3-year cycle of grant funding.
The Community Voices Final Report (English
/
Spanish)
was released March 2000.
In 2002-03, we updated Community Voices data and
identified new needs and trends through a variety of
sources, including analyzing Census 2000 data and
holding discussions with community members.
The
Community Voices Final Report, released May
2003, summarizes information gathered from various
sectors of the community.
The City hired the RAND Corporation to review and
update selected demographic indicators, with the
objective of highlighting descriptive information
about the City’s population and trends over the last
decade. The
RAND
Report: City of Santa Monica Community Profile
was released January 2003.
