In
May 2006, the City launched Project Homecoming, a family reunification
program. The program is available to homeless individuals and families
currently receiving services from City-funded homeless agencies,
individuals and families who have received a notice of eviction from a
Santa Monica address and individuals in the process of discharge from
the foster care, criminal justice, health, mental health or substance
abuse systems in Santa Monica who will be homeless upon discharge. The
goal of the program is to reunify individuals with their family members
by arranging and providing travel assistance. So far, the program has
helped hundreds of people reunite with their friends and family.
ONE SUCCESS STORY:
A longtime
OPCC Daybreak client used Project
Homecoming to reunite with her friend in
Seattle, Washington. As planned, the process was
quick. An intake was completed on a Tuesday; at
the participant's request, a bus ticket was
purchased for the following day. An OPCC staff
member made sure that the participant had enough
food for the trip, brought her to the Hollywood
bus station, and assured that she got on the
bus. By Thursday, the participant was housed
with her friend. She has since transitioned to
a sober living home, attends 12-step meetings
and is volunteering at a local homeless service
agency.
