Best Management Practices for Coffee Shops
Discarding waste into the street, alley, gutter is a violation of the Santa Monica Municipal Code, Section 5.20.040 and is punishable with an administrative fine up to $1000 and/or other enforcement actions. Please train all employees to follow these Best Management Practices (BMPs) and help keep Santa Monica Bay clean:
When cleaning outside seating areas, try to minimize water use as much as possible. First, sweep the area and dispose of trash and debris in a garbage container. If more thorough cleaning is necessary, mop the area and dispose of the wastewater in the sewer system in a sink or a toilet. Do not pour mop water in the street, alley, or storm drain.
Do not rinse floor mats outside. Clean them in a sink or dishwasher or take them to a self-service car wash.
Do not hose down dumpsters and trash areas. Make sure trash bags are closed tightly and dumpster lids are kept closed. Please recycle whenever possible.
