DESCRIPTION |
The city wants to minimize the amount of urban runoff entering the Bay. This necessitates an increase in the permeable land area in the
city. The city’s target is an increasing trend in the addition of permeable surfaces to the urban landscape in Santa Monica.

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY |
Of Santa Monica's total 234,026,886 square feet, permeable land is 43,021,138 square foot, or about 18% permeable. The permeable surfaces in the
city include open space, tree wells and other surface areas. The target is to have an increasing trend in the permeable surfaces in the
city.

HIGHLIGHTS |
The City of Santa Monica has passed an Ordinance designed to reduce the amount of urban runoff that reaches the Bay. The Ordinance requires a 0.75” reduction in rainfall leaving all impermeable surfaces of all newly developed parcels within the
city.

ANALYSIS |
The City of Santa Monica identifies urban runoff/storm water as the number one source of pollutants in the Santa Monica Bay. The amount of urban runoff in an area and the pollutants present in the runoff are affected by the amount of rainfall, degree of urbanization and ground surface permeability. The water in urban runoff can come from rainwater, landscaping overflow, car washing and many other phenomena. In urban areas, the naturally permeable landscape has been replaced with acres of hard, impermeable surfaces. Roofs, parking lots, streets and sidewalks are some of the many impervious surfaces in the urban environment. These surfaces do not allow water to infiltrate. This collected water travels over urban surfaces, picking up pollutants before it dumps directly into the Bay or is channeled into a storm drain system.
