High Efficiency Toilet Rebates
What is a High-Efficiency Toilet?

High efficiency toilets (HETs) – use 1.3 gallons of water or less with each flush.  HETs use 20% less water than the already efficient Ultra-Low Flow Toilets, the current national plumbing code standard of 1.6 gallons per flush.

  • Gravity Tank Toilets – most commonly used in residential and small businesses.

  • Pressure Assisted Tank Toilets – use air pressure to force a vigorous flush.

  • Dual Flush Toilets – uses a half flush for liquids and full flush for solids; can be a gravity or pressure assisted.

What is the High-efficiency Toilet Rebate?
If you purchase, install and submit an HET rebate application for a qualified toilet between March 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007 for your residence in Santa Monica, you may be eligible for a rebate.  Rebates are available on a limited first come, first served basis.  Rules and regulations are subject to change.
New construction project:                                  $30 rebate
Retrofit a 1.6 gallon per flush toilet:                     $30 rebate
Retrofit a 1.7 or more gallon per flush toilet:         Rebate up to $245
(rebate not to exceed product purchase price).

Who Can Participate?
This HET rebate program is available for toilets installed in single-family homes, apartment buildings, condominiums and townhomes.  Eligibility is contingent upon past toilet rebate  participation.  Upon receipt of the application you will be notified immediately if ineligible.  This rebate does not apply to businesses. See Business Water Efficiency Programs & Rebates for available rebates.

Which High-Efficiency Toilets Qualify for the Rebate?
Print a list of qualified high-efficiency toilets or call the Bay Saver Program toll-free at (1) (866) 728-3229

Before buying a new toilet, take the measurements of the current footprint (also known as the rough-in measurement).  At the base of the toilet, measure the distance from the wall to the bolt that holds the toilet to the floor (typically 10” to 14”) and note if the bowl is round or elongated.

How Do I Apply?
Download the Rebate Application  or call (866) 728-3229 to have one mailed to you.  Complete the application, attach the receipt that lists the make and model along with a copy of your most recent water bill. The average rebate takes 4 weeks to process. An inspection may be required before funds are released.

How Do I Find Out What Make, Model and Year My Existing Toilet Is?
Check if the toilet is stamped 1.6 gpf.  You can find this stamp on the toilet where the seat/lid attaches to the bowl.  Remove the tank lid.  Look for an imprint in the tank that has the make, model and year.

How Do I Maintain My Toilet?
●  Check for leaks periodically and fix immediately – it could save you hundreds of dollars.
●  Replace the flapper in a gravity tank toilet every 2 years and use the toilet manufacturers’ brand designed for your make and model (look inside the tank for the model number).
●  Use non-toxic cleaners and avoid bleach tablets which corrode the parts inside the tank.
