10 Ways to Reduce Air Pollution

Light it Right!

Cloud in the sky

One compact fluorescent light bulb could save you $30-$40 during its lifetime. It could also save 34 gallons of oil, 2.8 lbs. of smog, 5.2 lbs. of acid rain, and 850 lbs. of carbon dioxide. Compact fluorescents can be found at your local hardware store.

Say No to Topping Off the Tank.

Topping off the tank can contribute to smog, fill the air with cancer-causing toxic pollutants such as benzene, and waste gasoline. Please go easy at the pump.

Report Smoking Vehicles.

With mobile sources responsible for 2/3 of California’s air pollution, we need to make sure the vehicles on the road are as clean as possible. If you see a smoking vehicle, call 1-800-END-SMOG and report it.

Make the Rideshare Commitment!

If you commit to ridesharing once a day, week, or month, you will be helping to improve our air (and traffic)! To find a carpool near you or to plan a trip using mass transit visit: California Rideshare

Don’t Be an Energy Hog!

We learned in 2001 why energy conservation is important to our homes and businesses. Let’s continue to conserve, and we’ll reduce emissions from power plants, refineries, and tailpipes.

Tune that Engine.

When a car engine is not properly tuned, it emits more particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides. It also wastes gas and lowers engine performance. Please get your car tuned regularly.

Avoid using toxic chemicals.

Sounds like common sense, but most consumers don’t realize common household items (such as window cleaners, bug sprays, and paints) can be toxic. To find out about natural alternatives, call 1-888-CLEAN-LA.

When Dry Cleaning, Think Wet Instead!

Dry cleaning uses a toxic chemical called PERC which is a possible human carcinogen. PERC poses a risk to the consumer, worker, and surrounding community. Instead of dry cleaning consider wet cleaning, the professional alternative which is a non-toxic process proven to be just as effective.

Get an Electric Lawn Mower!

Conventional gas-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers and weed trimmers are a significant source of smog. Garden equipment emits high levels of pollutants; a typical 3.5 horsepower engine can emit the same amount of pollution in an hour as a new car driven 340 miles. Gasoline spills are also a major problem. It was recently estimated in the US that over 17 million gallons of fuel are spilled each year while outdoor power equipment is being filled. Electric mowers require no starting, no motor maintenance, and are very clean. You can get a corded and cordless model.

Want to help our air in a big way?

The next time you buy a car, think about its fuel efficiency. For most of us, driving a gasoline car is the single most damaging thing we will ever do to the environment. For more on cleaner cars, visit: California Air Resources Board.
