No Water Use
Urinals
No water use urinals were introduced
into the U.S. in 1991 as demand for water efficient
fixtures grew.
The fixtures have many advantages. A
water- free urinal may save as much as 40,000
gallons of water each year, with locked in savings.
The fixtures are simple and inexpensive to maintain,
requiring the periodic change of an insert or
cartridge that acts as a one-way barrier to the
sanitary sewer, eliminating the need for periodic
plumbing repairs and, as was shown in a recent study
by UCLA, producing less odor and better sanitation
than conventionally plumbed fixtures.

Maintenance
Typically, cartridges will need to be changed every
7,000 uses or 3-4 months. Signs indicating
cartridge replacement include slow urine flow or
stopped flow. Removal of the cartridge is easy. A
key is used to unlock the cartridge. The cartridge
is lifted out and excess urine flows directly into
the sewer. The cartridge is then removed and
disposed of in the trash. A bucket of water is
poured directly into the outlet to flush the line. A
new cartridge is locked into place and 32 oz. of
water is poured into cartridge followed by the
sealant liquid. Daily cleaning is recommended by
wiping the urinal clean with a non-toxic,
non-abrasive cleaner. |
