May 21, 2001 MEETING OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA
TASK FORCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT
The meeting was convened at 7:15
p.m. Task Force members in
attendance: Tim Carmichael, Bill Selby, Susan Mearns, and Mark Gold. Santa Monica City
staff in attendance: Craig Perkins,
Susan McCarthy and Rich Berman. Others: MWD Board member Judy Abdo.
Minutes
The minutes from the meeting of
April 23, 2001 were unanimously approved once a quorum was achieved near the end
of the meeting.
Review of Environmental and Public Works Management
Budget Proposal
In the absence of a quorum for the
initial part of the meeting, there was general discussion and questions about
the budget proposal. Discussion
items included outreach for the Sustainable City Program, the Sustainable
Schools proposal, parking and traffic, community gardens and open space, solid
waste, and water conservation. With
Mark Gold’s arrival a quorum was reached and, following further discussion, the
Task Force unanimously approved a motion recommending the following objective be
added to the EPWM budget: “The City will encourage and assist the Santa Monica
Malibu Unified School District and Santa Monica College in their efforts to
create and implement a Sustainable Schools Program.”
Civic Center Working Group Update
Due to lack of time this item was not discussed. It will be agendized for discussion at
the June meeting of the Task Force.
Task Force Vacancy
Craig Perkins
presented an update on progress made to identify candidates to fill the vacancy.
Applications from candidates will be presented to the Task Force for review and
recommendation at the June meeting.
Metropolitan Water District Update
MWD Board member Judy Abdo provided the update. The MWD budget process is continuing.
Judy will keep the Task Force informed about any notable developments. The board recently approved title changes
for the General Manager (now called President / CEO) and the Assistant General
Manager (now called Vice President). With regard to the proposed Task Force
ban on polystyrene foam packaging, Judy suggested that MWD might be able to
assist with funding as a conservation partnership.
