JUNE 9, 2008 MEETING OF THE

CITY OF SANTA MONICA

SUSTAINABLE CITY TASK FORCE

 

 

Task force members in attendance: Jennifer Wolch, Dennis Woods, Al Rosen, Leonard Mitchell and Christina Erickson. City staff in attendance: Shannon Parry and Dean Kubani. Members of the community in attendance: Mark Pezarro, John Tylee and Louisa Fish.

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm.

 

Public Input on Agenda Items

There was no public input on agenda items.

 

Approval of Minutes from the May 16, 2008 meeting

The minutes from the May 16, 2008 meeting were unanimously approved.

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding the Santa Monica Strategy For A Sustainable Local Economy

Shannon Parry introduced the item.  Earthvoice Strategies has been chosen as the consultant for the Santa Monica Strategy for a Sustainable Local Economy. Lead staff from Earthvoice Strategies attended the meeting.  Mark Pezarro and John Tylee provided a detailed overview of their scope of service and proposed timeline. They also engaged the task force in a discussion to identify significant issues that the task force would like to see addressed in the Santa Monica Strategy for a Sustainable Local Economy.  The task force highlighted a number of issues, including the importance of a viable base model for resource use and pollution generation as well as the significance of green jobs and green jobs training programs. 

 

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan- Phase 2 Economic Development Goal Area Shannon Parry provided an update on the timeline for completing the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan- Phase 2  and the timeline for delivering the introduced the Santa Monica Strategy For A Sustainable Local Economy.

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding the Santa Monica Land Use and Circulation Element

After discussion, the task force moved to create a LUCE subcommittee to provide written comments and support for the LUCE. The subcommittee will include Dennis Woods and Jennifer Wolch.

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding the Proposed 2008/09 Budget  Dean Kubani provided the update. Starting July 1, 2008 the Environmental Programs Division is now the Office of Sustainability and the Environment in the City Managers Office.

 

Update from the Sustainable City Task Force Presentation Proposal

No update was given.

 

Liaison Updates

    • Solar SM: Al Rosen provided the update. Solar Santa Monica is working on financial incentives for solar installation.
    • Parks and Recreation Commission:  Jennifer Wolch provided the update. The Beach Greening project opening was a success and the space is being utilized.
    • Santa Monica Airport Commission: Leonard Mitchell provided the update on the Santa Monica Airport Sustainability Plan and current FAA action.
    • TFOE: Christina Erickson provided the update. The task force is working on securing funding for the Measure V stormwater engineer as well as training for staff to ensure consistency in plan check and inspection for green practices.  
    • Chamber of Commerce: Shannon Parry provided an update on the successful Sustainable Quality Awards and the Green Business Certification Program.

 

Public Input on Non-Agendized Items

Louisa Fish, a member of the Santa Monica Senior Commission, commented on the need to consider rehabilitation of existing buildings as a green and sustainable practice that facilitates a number of sustainability goals in the city while also allowing seniors to age in place.
