JANUARY 14, 2008 MEETING OF THE

CITY OF SANTA MONICA

SUSTAINABLE CITY TASK FORCE

 

 

The meeting was convened at 7:30pm.

 

Sustainable City Task Force members in attendance:  Jim Ries, Laura Berland Shane, Dennis Woods, Al Rosen, Christina Erikson, Carol Rosskam and Jennifer Wolch. City staff in attendance: Dean Kubani, Susan Munves and Shannon Parry. Members of the public in attendance:  Santa Monica Parks and Recreation Commissioner Susan Cloke, Community Sustainability Liaison Traci Reitz, Louisa Fish and Michael Ware.  

 

Public Input on Agenda Items

Louisa Fish commented that the Sustainable Santa Monica event at the library has not been adequately advertised in the print media. She requested that future events at the library be included on the library’s events calendar and that print advertising not be lost in light of newer virtual advertising strategies.  Louisa Fish also requested that Solar Santa Monica address multi-family housing in a more thorough manner.

 

Approval of Minutes from the November 12, 2007 meeting

Dennis Woods made a motion to approve the minutes from the November 12, 2007 meeting.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding Solar Santa Monica

Susan Munves provided the update. She summarized the outcomes of Solar Santa Monica’s initial pilot phase. During the last year, over 335 kW of solar were installed in Santa Monica, with the City itself leading the way.

 

After discussion, the Task Force commended Solar Santa Monica on their success.  The Task force also asked about the challenges to realizing the Solar Santa Monica vision. In particular the Task Force inquired about the ability to standardize cost, provide financing and consider alternative funding scenarios. 

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the Update of the Land Use and Circulation Element

Susan Cloke introduced the item. She presented an overview of the city’s park and recreation characteristics.  She also introduced the strategies necessary to realize the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission’s vision of the ‘City As Park.’  She highlighted the significant opportunity that the update of the Land Use and Circulation Elements represents in this process.

 

After discussion, the Task Force unanimously approved the following motion:

Motion:  The Santa Monica Sustainable City Task Force supports the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission’s vision of the ‘City As Park’ and encourage its integration into the update of the Land Use and Circulation Elements.  The realization of the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission’s vision of the ‘City As Park’ is an important step in realizing many of the goals established in the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan.

 

The Task Force also suggested that the Recreation and Parks Commission consider explicitly highlighting the relationship between their vision of the ‘City As Park’ and the Sustainable City Plan.

 

 

Update from the Community Sustainability Liaison

Traci Reitz provided the update. She will be hosting a Sustainable Santa Monica panel discussion on Tuesday, January 29th at the Main library. Speakers will include representatives from Sustainable Works, Global Green, The city’s Energy and Green Building Office and the Environmental Programs Division.  

 

After discussion, the Task Force suggested that Traci Reitz would provide monthly updates, a quarterly report and an annual report to the Task Force.  The monthly updates will include a brief summary of successes, challenges and opportunities.  The quarterly report will include work plan objectives and outcomes.  The annual report will be a detailed report that tracks actions and outcomes and includes recommendations for future action.

 

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding Sustainable City Task Force Participation

Shannon Parry introduced the item.  The Task Force reviewed the Sustainable City Task Force Attendance and Preparedness Requirements.

 

Liaison Updates

o       Jim Ries provided the LUCE update.  The next 6 months are a very active period in the LUCE process and he encouraged the Task Force to fully participate in the upcoming community workshops.  The next workshop is on Boulevards and will be held February 9th at 9:30 a.m. in the John Adams Middle School Cafeteria.

o       Shannon Parry provided the Chamber of Commerce update.  The 2008 Sustainable Quality Awards will be held on May 13th.  Nominations are now being accepted.  You can visit www.smsqa.com for more information.

o       Shannon Parry provided the SMMUSD update. The SMMUSD sustainable design charette is scheduled for February.  

o       Shannon Parry provided the CVB update. The CVB continues to work on the “I Know Santa Monica” program. They are also moving forward with a pilot Green Hotels Certification program.
