Community members in attendance:   Louisa Fish, Albert Rosen, one other member of the community.

Public Input on Agenda Items

Albert Rosen commented that his name was spelled incorrectly in the April 10, 2006 SCTF meeting minutes.  Staff noted that this error had been corrected for the staff report sent to City Council.

Approval of Minutes from the March 28, 2006 meeting

The minutes of the March 28, 2006 meeting were approved by vote of 3 to 1.

Jennifer Wolch abstained from the vote.

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan (30 min)

Task Force members discussed section 4c of the draft outline for the Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan (SCPIP).  Following discussion and modifications to the outline and the Economic Development Section 4c, the Task Force members requested that Sandy Grant work with staff to incorporate all current and previous modifications into a new version of the SCPIP.

Genevieve Bertone agreed to work with Christina Erickson to ensure that the Task Force Outreach Activities section of the staff report was complete.

The updated draft of the SCPIP will be discussed for possible adoption at the May 8th meeting pending input from the City’s Economic Development staff and the completion of modified text.

Discussion Regarding Scheduling Meeting with New City Manager and Review of Draft Presentation (30 min)

Sandy Grant gave the update. She has not heard back from the City Manager or his office. She will follow up with Sandra Garcia and Bridgett Stermer to find a time for the City Manager to meet with the Sustainable City Task Force.

Dean Kubani reviewed the draft PowerPoint presentation the SCTF requested for the future meeting with the City Manager.  The Task Force recommended that a selection of recommendations and Sustainable City Plan successes be added to the presentation.

Discussion and Recommendations Regarding Rotation of SCTF Chair and Vice Chair Positions (15 min)

Sandy Grant started the discussion and commented on the need to rotate the SCTF Chair and Vice Chair. She added that July 2006 will be the end of the second year of service for the current Chair and Vice Chair.  Given the conclusion of the Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan and the appointment of three new members, the Task Force agreed that July would be a natural time for the rotation.

After discussion, the following Motion was unanimously approved:

The Sustainable City Task Force will rotate the positions of Chair and Vice Chair every two years. The current term will end in July 2006. The nomination and voting for the new Chair and Vice Chair will occur simultaneously at the June meeting.

Subcommittee Reports (15 min)

  1. Community Engagement Subcommittee
    1. Genevieve Bertone gave the update on an environmental audit of Santa Monica College to be conducted by SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies (CEUS).   She noted that the Santa Monica College Academic Senate unanimously passed the resolution calling for the creation of a joint task force to review and update the environmental audit and draft a plan to steer SMC towards sustainability.  She invited Task Force members to the SMC Environmental Audit Kick Off event on May 18th at the CEUS.

    1. Sandy Grant gave the update on the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau Branding Summit.  Sandy pointed out that the realization of section 4c of the Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan could add environmental performance data to future CVB assessments of tourism impacts.

  1. Policy Subcomittee
    1. Sandy Grant gave the update and commended the Task Force members for the hard work being done on the Sustainable City Plan Implementation Plan.
