OBJECTIVE
The Economic Development
Division's objective is to sustain continued
growth of the local tax base while
encouraging retention of small businesses,
to provide more usable service opportunities
to local residents, and to create a stable
and sustainable business environment with an
optimal mix of tenants for the local
economy.
IMPLEMENTATION
STRATEGIES
The Division will focus assistance
toward neighborhood-serving businesses,
identify and enhance the viability of
emerging key business sectors, and promote
and assist primary commercial districts
within the City in a manner of benefit to
the residents and the general community.
- Increase coordination and outreach
within the existing business improvement
areas of Main Street, Bayside District,
Montana Avenue, and Pico Boulevard;
examine other commercial corridors that
may need facilitated assistance, and
encourage business district
coordination, cooperation, and
problem-solving with the adjacent
community.
- Update and expand the provision and
scope of demographic and economic
statistical information regarding the
City, analyze emerging economic trends
in the City, and disseminate the
demographic and economic information to
internal and external customers.
- Adapt the City's Small Business
Development Center (SBDC) to focus
additional assistance programs for
technologically-challenged local
businesses, and create linkage of the
SBDC to neighborhood-serving businesses.
- Expand the role of the Farmers'
Market program to provide education and
training in healthy food alternatives,
broaden the direct sales to additional
local restaurants and hotels, and expand
local participation in Women, Infant and
Children (WIC) Program.
- Enhance property management services
to improve economic performance of the
Santa Monica Pier through transition of
a key restaurant site and the Carousel,
and create systematic lease
administration.
