Santa Monica contains several business
improvement districts (BIDs). Each BID
was formed at the request of its businesses
and provides funding for a variety of
promotion and problem-solving efforts
through an assessment levy on the businesses
within the district. Budgeted expenses for
these districts range from promotional and
joint advertising to providing special
maintenance or operational needs. Some
business improvement districts hire staff;
others depend solely on volunteer efforts to
fulfill their mandate. Most of the
districts have been in place for many years; with
the most recent, Pico Boulevard BID,
beginning on July 1, 2000.
