Santa Monica Public Library Announces Winners of
2008 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature

Santa Monica, California – The Santa Monica Public Library announced the 2008 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature Award winners at a ceremony on Saturday, October 4.  This is the second year that the Library has presented the Green Prize Awards to honor authors, illustrators, and publishers who produce quality books that make significant contributions to, support the ideas of, and broaden public awareness of sustainability.  The City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan defines sustainability as “meeting current needs – environmental, economic and social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.”

Books published in the United States during the 2007 calendar year were eligible for the Prize.  Criteria include effective presentation of material; distinctive literary quality; and originality of scholarship.  Youth titles for consideration were required to have potential for classroom use and be appropriate for students in grades K-12.
