Active Living

Get out and get moving with WALK Santa Monica - a daily "10,000 steps" program designed to encourage active living and walking as a means of promoting fitness, wellness and a more livable community. 

Developed by the National Institutes of Health, 10,000 Steps is a convenient way to measure the minimum amount of daily activity needed for the average adult to get and stay healthy.  Our seven popular walks around the city are a great place to start incorporating 10,000 steps into your daily life.  (10,000 steps equal roughly 5.1 miles.) The walks are described and plotted on our Walk Santa Monica map, available at all city libraries and at City Hall.

Everyone's doing it - Nordic Walking! Featured in the Daily Press, these classes offered through the City are a great low-impact way to burn lots of calories while enjoying the outdoors.  For current class offerings, please visit RecScape on-line.

Walking is not only a worthwhile form of physical activity and an excellent method of transportation, it is also the best way to explore your neighborhood and community.  As an alternative to driving, walking also helps to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.  National attention is focusing on an alarming trend toward inactivity, obesity and disease stemming from poor lifestyle choices. We are lucky to live in Santa Monica, where we enjoy good weather year-round, making active lifestyles easier to achieve than in many cities nationwide.
