Choose Civility

The Santa Monica City Council, at its regular December 13, 2011 Council meeting, adopted a resolution endorsing standards of behavior that promote civility at all public meetings.  In establishing these standards, Council’s goal was to promote civil discourse and participation during public meetings by enhancing the people’s right to speak and allowing all present to express their opinions without the fear of retaliation or verbal attacks.

 Civility Logo

The goal of instituting the resolution is to “safeguard participatory democracy in Santa Monica,” and this is presented as 6 points:

  • Treat everyone courteously

  • Listen to others respectfully

  • Exercise self-control

  • Give open-minded consideration to all viewpoints

  • Focus on the issues and avoid personalizing debate

  • Embrace respectful disagreement and dissent as democratic rights, inherent components of an inclusive public process, and tools for forging sound decisions

Are you interested in having your organization adopt the City's Civility policy? If so, please feel free to download the resolution and promotional signs.  If you have any questions about using our materials or would like templates for any of our items, please contact the City Clerk’s Office either via phone or email, 310-458-8211 or clerk@smgov.net.
