| August in Santa Monica is the perfect time of year for lazing in the sun or relaxing in the shade. And repeating last year’s successful summer concert series, the City’s Cultural Affairs Division will make it possible to do both while experiencing a sensational musical encounter by the sea. Taking full advantage of this delicious summer weather, the City of Santa Monica’s Jazz on the Lawn returns to Santa Monica on four consecutive Sundays in August. From 5:00 to 7:00pm on August 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th the City will present four dazzling jazz ensembles on the lawn in front of City Hall. Bring your friends, your family and a picnic dinner to this series of free outdoor concerts where you can spread a blanket on the grass, stretch out in your lawn chair and doze in the shade of your own beach umbrella and enjoy the coolest breezes and hottest sounds in all of LA. |

Sunday Brazil, Brasil blasts off the series on August 5th courtesy of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Free Concerts in Public program. This refreshing collection of internationally renowned performers features Brazilian singers Ana Gazzola and Sonia Santos. The dynamic duo along with a host of talented musicians make use of a variety of unique and authentic percussive instruments to deliver the passion, enthusiasm and excitement of popular Brazilian music. The joyful feel of Carnival will flow across the lawn while audiences are both entertained and educated about the rich tropical culture that is Brazil. Sunday The Jazz Tap Ensemble, performing on August 12th, is dedicated to two great American traditions - tap dancing and jazz music. Hailed as leaders in the renaissance of tap, this outstanding company will present two dancers and three musicians from the ensemble whose virtuoso dancing and musicality will simply blow you away. Under the direction of artistic director Lynn Dally, these amazing artists will create a display of spirited creativity and spontaneity that make the Ensemble one of Southern California’s most prestigious dance companies. |

Sunday Nate Birkey takes the stage on August 19th. His subtle vocals and trumpet stylings mixed with his creative melodies and his vivid charisma bring to life a sound that is both poised and assured. Audiences will savor his forays into Americana, Gospel, Bossa Nova, and straight-ahead jazz as heard on his most recent live CD, Shortest Day. |

Maggie Palomo Maggie Palomo spent the summer evenings of her youth listening to the sounds of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin. On August 26th she combines the Motown sound with that of her Cuban heritage to dominate the stage. This Santa Monica artist will wrap up the series with the hottest salsa tunes you’ve ever heard. |

Free parking is available after 4:00 pm at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium at 1855 Main Street and on the streets surrounding City Hall. And you can support the Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center by buying waters and soft drinks from our local teens. The kids will even have a selection of their artwork including hand screened t-shirts and other creations available for purchase. Jazz on the Lawn is produced by the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division with support from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Recording Industries Music Performance Fund. |
