The regular Social Services Commission Meeting was held at the above named place and time. 

 

MINUTES

 

  1. Call to Order:  The Monday, August 22, 2005 regular Social Services Commission Meeting was called to order by Commissioner Perliter at 7:06 pm.

 

  1. Roll Call

  1. Approval of Minutes: Motion by Commissioner Huizar, seconded by Commissioner Barish, to adopt the minutes of the regular July 25, 2005 meeting.  The motion carried by voice vote.

 

  1. Public Input: A member of the public, Jerry Rubin, announced the formation of the Activist Support Circle.

 

     A member of the public, Jerry Rubin, requested information about the Bring LA Home process, as well as an update on reinitiating the Homeless Task Force.

 

Motion by Commissioner Huizar, seconded by Commissioner Crimmins, to move items 7, 6A and 6B to follow item 4.  The motion carried by voice vote.

 

  1. Committee Reports:

 

A.     Older Youth Issues and Needs: The committee had no new information to report. 

 

B.    Violence (Interpersonal/Community):  The committee had no new information to report. 

 

C.    New Approaches to Addressing Homelessness:  Stacy Rowe, Human Services Administrator, updated the Commission on City and local projects related to homelessness, including the Chronic Homelessness Project, the new Serial Inebriate Program, and the Bring LA Home process.  Ms. Rowe also announced that the City had recently been awarded over $700,000 for rental subsidies for persons who are chronically homeless and addicted to alcohol.

 

  1. Old Business

 

A.     FY 2005-06 Social Services Commission Budget:  Motion by Commissioner Gunn, seconded by Commissioner Barish, to set aside an amount not to exceed $100 to print additional copies of the Social Services Commission Resource Guide.  The motion carried by voice vote.

 

B.    Social Services Commission Retreat:  Motion by Commissioner Gunn, seconded by Commissioner Crimmins, to hold a special meeting of the Social Services Commission on September 24, 2005 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at a location to be determined.  The motion carried by voice vote.

 

The Commission discussed a number of potential topics to be discussed at the retreat.

 

  1. Announcements/Staff Updates: Mona Miyasato, Human Services Manager, introduced herself to the Commission.  She will be in the position for one year during Julie Rusk’s sabbatical.

 

  1. Adjournment:  Motion by Commissioner Huizar, seconded by Commissioner Sampson, to adjourn the regular Social Services Commission meeting at 8:33 p.m. The motion carried by voice vote.
