FOREWORD
We hope you find the
information contained in this document helpful.
Statistics are most useful in identifying trends,
and the statistics in this Profile should be treated
as such. Small changes of a percentage point or two
may not be significant, although larger changes may
be useful in determining what is happening within a
particular area of the population or the economy.
In preparing this Profile, the most up-to-date data
sources have been used. That is not to say that
these sources are always of recent origin; some data
depends entirely on U.S. Census information compiled
every ten years. Much of the information in this
Profile has been gathered via the U.S. Census and
from the City of Santa Monica’s Opportunities
and Challenges July 2005 report. Employment
data regarding jobs in Santa Monica is provided
through the Labor Market Information Division.
Business information is highly dependent on sales
tax information available to cities through the
State Board of Equalization (SBOE) and private
consultants hired by the City. While this
information is accurate, it does not give an
adequate picture of non-taxable services, and so we
have not attempted to evaluate those except on the
largest basis possible, the total income reported on
all business licenses in Santa Monica.
