statistics reflect population data that is based
upon 2000 U.S. Census as well as data extrapolated
from the City of Santa Monica’s Opportunities and
Challenges 2005. You may review additional

Opportunities and Challenges July 2005.
According to the 2000 U.S.
census, Santa Monica’s population of 84,084 accounts
for approximately 0.9% of the population of Los
Angeles County (9,519,338). The City’s population
represents a density of 10,131 people per square
mile. Fueled by the post war growth, the City’s
population grew significantly following the early
1940’s. As illustrated in Table 1.1, the City’s
population has not changed significantly over the
past 20-30 years, albeit since the 1980’s the
population has actually declined slightly with each
census.

Figure 1.1 illustrates Santa
Monica’s population distribution by neighborhood.
The largest share of residents, 40.5%, inhabit the
northern part of Santa Monica (north of Wilshire
Blvd.), followed by 30.3% in the southern part of
the City (south of Pico Blvd., Ocean Park and Sunset
Park), 23.2% are in the Mid-City/Pico Neighborhood
and 6.0% of the population reside in the
Downtown/Ocean Front area.
