FAMILIES, HOUSEHOLDS, & RESIDENCY PATTERNS
Santa Monica households are
more concentrated in one-person households than in
households with two or more persons. According to
the 2000 U.S. Census, Santa Monica household types
have a higher concentration of single person
households at 51.2%. Table 1.5 illustrates that
while 38.1% of Santa Monica’s households are made of
two or more person family households, a majority of
Los Angeles County households, 68.7% are comprised
of two plus-person family households.
Figure 1.2 shows that among its family
households, the City’s percentage (25.6%) of married
couple households with children was lower than in
the county (29.4%), a higher percentage of married
couple households with no children present (59.2%
vs. 44.9%), and similar percentages of households
with a single parent. Santa Monica’s average family
size was 2.80 in 2000, compared with the county
average of 3.61.
Among senior citizen
households, Santa Monica had a lower percentage
(29.6%) of married couple households compared with
the county (40.9%), and a higher percentage of
seniors living alone (59.5% vs. 41.6%), as shown in
Figure 1.3.
